Current SMU junior and former Hays High golfer Lindsey McCurdy took a high-ranked women’s amateur player to the brink of elimination at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Portland, Ore.
McCurdy’s upset bid fell short as Hannah O’Sullivan, the eventual U.S. Women’s Amateur Champion, defeated McCurdy 1-Up in Friday’s Match Play quarterfinal.
McCurdy, who was ranked 490th in the Women’s Amateur Golf Ranking, held a two hole lead after ten holes on O’Sullivan, who entered the competition ranked 7th in the WAGR.
O’Sullivan, who won the tournament and earned an exemption to the Ladies Professional Golf Association, rallied late and held off a late McCurdy rally down the stretch.
McCurdy won the 2012 UIL 4A girls individual state championship as a junior at Hays High. She played in 12 tournaments during the 2014-2015 season in her sophomore year at SMU. She averaged a score of 75.51 and had three top-20 finishes, and seven top-25 finishes.
