I am writing in support of the Hays school district reinstating “Dixie” as the school’s fight song. I can understand the confederate flag offending certain people, in fact, I don’t care much for the flag personally, but “Dixie” should not have been removed by the board. Removing “Dixie” is not going to eliminate the number of racist bigots out there.
Getting rid of “Dixie” is going to divide the people on both sides of the issue. It’s not helping matters to get rid of that song. When I hear that song, it revs up my system and gets me excited. That song will always be my fight song for the rest of my life. I feel that the board overreacted to the Charleston incident. Don’t get me wrong, it was a tragic incident, but that should not be an excuse to change the song. I support what former Hays coach Bob Shelton said, to forget political correctness is and do what is the proper action and that is to restore the “Dixie” fight song and leave it alone. I feel they did not do the right thing getting rid of that song. They should have left it as it was. They need to forget political correctness and do the right thing and restore “Dixie” and leave it alone.
