Staff report
A Kyle man has been identified as one of two people killed in a wrong-way collision that happened on the Texas 130 toll road in Austin Sunday.
According to a report from the Austin American-Statesman, authorities have identified Stephen Ryan Flores, 29, of Kyle and Walter Pilcher, 42, of Round Rock as the two people killed in a crash that happened near Harold Green Road in Austin.
Flores was killed after he entered the toll road and began to head north in the southbound lane, this according to a DPS spokesperson. According to the American-Statesman’s report, a Travis County deputy attempted to pull Flores over, using the county car’s lights and sirens. Law enforcement, however, cannot drive in the wrong direction, and the deputy had to attempt to stop him in the opposite lane.
Flores’ vehicle, a Hyundai Sonata, struck a Ford Explorer head-on that was driven by Pilcher. Also in the Explorer was Pilcher’s 15-year-old son, who was a passenger.
One other driver, Dawn Morris, 49, of Hutto, attempted to avoid the crash in her Chevy Silverado, but was struck by the Explorer.
Pilcher and Flores died on the scene. Morris and the teenage son were taken to area hospitals. All four were wearing seat belts. The DPS spokesperson didn’t have any information on whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
