Winston Carroll Smith, former pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church (IBC) in Kyle, Texas died on Oct. 1, 2015, in Denison, Texas, of leukemia. Pastor Winston served IBC during the 1980s. Many Kyle residents have fond memories of his robust demeanor in sharing the love of Christ, his friendliness and his fondness for a good laugh.
Winston was born Jan. 28, 1936 in Eunice, LA. where he attended Acadia Baptist Academy and graduated from Eunice High School. In 1960 he graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University. Throughout his school career he excelled and had a tremendous track career.
Winston served in the Marine Corps from 1956-1958. He later became a teacher and coach at Iota High School in LA.
The last 31 years of his life were dedicated to God’s calling to be a Baptist pastor. He served in several locations–Louisiana, Texas, Iowa and Oklahoma. Currently he was pastor of Brown Baptist Church and continued to preach throughout his battle with cancer until the last few weeks. He also served in the Gideon’s International for many years
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Durant, OK; daughter, Shawn Smith Shirey and husband Wayland Shirey of Durant, OK; and son, Kris Smith and wife Connie Bourque Smith of New Iberia, LA. He leaves behind 6 grandsons and four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Memorial services were held Oct. 10, 2015 in Eunice, LA. An additional service will be held in Oklahoma on Oct. 17, 2015.
