Baseball hitting coach injured in accident
A Buda baseball instructor is recovering after he suffered serious upper body injuries in an accident involving an auger at the Manchaca Optimist Youth Baseball Fields last week.
The accident, which occurred on Oct. 8, involved Terry Lawrence, of Buda, who was airlifted by STARFlight to Univeristy Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin. Lawrence’s current condition is unknown.
The accident occurred during the process of constructing an addition to the complex that involved digging holes. The group helping Lawrence used an auger, which is a drill attached to a tractor, to dig holes for posts to hang netting.
According to a family member of Lawrence, one man was running the tractor while Lawrence was guiding the drill into the ground with an arm attached to it.
But Lawrence got too close, to the point where his shirt was caught by the drill bit. He was pulled into the drill, which caused substantial damage to the right side of his body. According to a family member, Lawrence’s right pectoral muscle was severed and had to be repaired, and he lost a majority of skin on the right side of his body.
Lawrence has had three surgeries thus far, with a skin graft surgery to be performed within the next week.
A gofundme account has been created to help Lawrence.
