The Westlake Lady Chaparrals defeated the Hays volleyball team 15-25, 19-25, 13-25 Friday at Bales Gym.
Hays (18-21, 6-7) was led by sophomore Kaitlyn Krafka, who scored a match high 10 kills. Supporting Krafka were juniors Mackenzie Coates with 23 assists and Ashley Slovak with six digs.
Westlake (35-6, 14-0) opened the night strong with six unanswered points before a mishandled ball by Westlake finally put the Lady Rebels on the board.
The Lady Rebels rallied to put more points on the board, but a solid Westlake defense kept the number down. Westlake continued its attack to hold up the lead and close out the set.
Both teams alternated points early in the second frame, where several kills by Krafka gave Hays a 12-10 lead.
The seesaw effect ended with Hays’ inability to close the set and allowed the Lady Chaparrals to pull away for the win.
Hays kept pace starting the third set, but fell short to Westlake’s persistent attack. Westlake pulled ahead 11-7 and kept up the momentum to end of the match.
Hays travels to play at Bowie on Friday, then closes the regular season against rival Lehman at home on Oct. 27. First set for the Hays and Lehman match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
