Fourteen Hays CISD cross country athletes will make their way to Grand Prairie next week as they perform at the UIL 6A Region II meet on Oct. 26.
They did so after advancing beyond the 14-6A district meet, which was held at Walter E. Long Lake in Austin on Oct. 16.
Highlighting Hays CISD’s success was senior Esmi Fuentes, who captured the 14-6A girl’s varsity cross country district individual championship. Fuentes finished with the time of 18:21.90, and won the title by holding off Bowie senior Marissa Flournoy.
Fuentes’ finish assisted the Hays High girls varsity team in securing second place overall in the team results. All seven Hays High girls cross country runners finished in the top 30 of the individual standings.
Freshman Shelby Adams finished in 13th place, while Georgia Cardosa completed the course in 16th. Sophomore Keely Smith finished in 20th place.
Not to be outdone, the Hays High boys’ varsity cross country team secured a regional spot with a 3rd place finish in the team standings.
Sophomore RJ Navarro finished in 6th place, followed by sophomore Robbie Woodworth’s 17th place finish.
For the Lehman Lobos, junior Tracy Malrey will be the school’s lone representative to compete in the Region II meet. But Malrey advanced to region by finishing in 7th place overall in the 14-6A varsity boys’ competition.
Malrey finished with a time of 16:52.00. On Oct. 10, Malrey finished in 18th place at the Westlake Invitational meet.
Lobo freshman Erik Gordillo earned a top-30 finish with a time of 17:52.00.
The Region II meet will be held at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, which is located roughly 11 miles southeast of Arlington.
