Five touchdowns from senior quarterback Xavier Martinez played a pivotal role in a 55-7 Hays Rebels win over the rival Lehman Lobos at Shelton Stadium.
Hays (7-0, 5-0) notches its 13th straight win over Lehman (0-7, 0-5) while also continuing the program’s best start to a season since the 2005 campaign.
Hays took command early on by scoring three unanswered first quarter touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead. Martinez rushed for two of those scores and tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Bayler Jordan.
Lehman immediately battled back to start to second frame. A three-yard touchdown run from running back Keyshaun Williams capped off a five play, 70 yard Lobo scoring drive. Williams’ score cut Hays’ lead to 21-7 early in the second frame.
Williams led the team with 47 yards rushing on 11 carries.
But Lehman was unable to keep Hays’ proficient offense out of the end zone. A 41-yard touchdown run by running back Sam Scott, followed by a one-yard plunge from Martinez expanded the Rebels’ lead to 35-7 at intermission.
Hays, which amassed 539 total yards of offense on the night, added 20 more unanswered points to close the game.
Scott finished with 137 rushing yards and a touchdown, while running back Quaysean Cropper had 115 yards and a score. As a team, Hays rushed for 437 yards on 58 carries. Martinez went 4 of 7 for 66 yards passing and two touchdowns, while rushing for 13 yards and a trio of scores on the ground.
Lobo quarterback Bryant Lewis went 5 of 18 passing for 87 yards and one interception. Lobo wide receiver CJ Scott caught one pass for 47 yards, while wide receiver Daniel O’Neal caught two passes for 21 yards.
