One person was killed and another was injured after fire destroyed a Driftwood-area home early Thursday.
The incident occurred in the 100 block of Buckskin Pass. According to a Hays County Sheriff’s Office Media Report, authorities were called out around 12:30 a.m. Thursday to provide assistance to fire crews.
Joyce Roberson, of Driftwood, has been identified by family as the victim in the fire. Dale Roberson, Joyce’s husband, was reported as injured and was transported to an area hospital. His condition is unknown.
Shannon Roberson, daughter of the couple, said Dale and a nearby neighbor tried to rescue Joyce from the structure, but were unable to get her out as the fire was “all-consuming.”
Additional details of the fire are unknown at this time; the Hays County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident.
Scott Collard, North Hays County Fire Rescue chief, said his department provided mutual aid by sending three fire trucks and a chief to assist the Wimberley Fire Department, which was initially dispatched. Fire crews from the Kyle Fire Department also provided assistance in containing the blaze. Collard said the home was a “total loss.”
The Robersons, who have lived in the Driftwood area for years, are co-founders of the News-Dispatch newspaper, which they started in 1982. Dale and Joyce Roberson owned and operated the News-Dispatch until they retired in 2013.
The News-Dispatch, along with family and friends of Dale and Joyce, is asking for the public’s help in assisting the Roberson family following the fire. Currently, the family is seeking temporary housing for Dale Roberson.
