Thank you for your report on Teen Drivers in Texas. At this time of the year, when families are travelling for the holidays and our days are full of distractions and holiday plans, it is easy to forget that impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death on Texas highways. While many adults are aware of the legal and social consequences of DWI, most teens are not. Prevention classes help increase knowledge and diminish the risk of alcohol-impaired crashes amongst teens. The Underage Drinking Prevention Program, which serves Hays, Travis and Williamson counties, provides underage drinking prevention classes and information booths for youth in grades 4th – 12th. Your Dec. 4 article highlighting the status of teen drivers in Texas clearly indicates the need for more safe driving prevention programs. Thank you for bringing this important issue to your readers’ attentions, and assisting us in our efforts to make a significant contribution in saving the lives of teenagers by discouraging underage alcohol consumption and underage DWI.
