SAN MARCOS — An 11-year-old Goodnight Middle School student died after being hit by a vehicle in the drop-off lane on Friday morning.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, San Marcos Police responded to Goodnight Middle School, located at 1301 State Highway 123, following a report of a collision. The school resource officer was on the campus and communicated over the police radio that a vehicle had struck a student in the parking lot.
Additional officers arrived on scene and confirmed the student had been struck by a vehicle in the drop-off lane. Justice of the Peace Maggie Moreno responded to the scene and pronounced the student deceased. The driver of the vehicle was identified and no charges are expected.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, Hays County and the San Marcos City Marshals Office assisted at the scene.
Classes at the Goodnight Middle School campus were canceled for the remainder of the day and students were moved to San Marcos High School to be reunited with their families. The district said that other than Goodnight families, the public should avoid the San Marcos HS area during the reunification process until regular dismissal.
“The loss of a student is devastating and we are all grieving together. I wish I had the right words to say, but I do not,” said Dr. Michael Cardona, superintendent of schools. “We appreciate your continued prayers and support for the family and the San Marcos CISD community impacted by this tragic incident. All secondary counselors are on site to assist students and staff during this difficult time.”
Any questions about student resources should be directed to San Marcos CISD.
