Richard Dale Kidd was born in Riverside, California on August 5, 1944. He passed away in his home surrounded by family on July 31, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Ann Schlickelman, his 2 children, 3 grand children, 1 great-grand child, his sister and 2 nieces.
Richard grew up in Tyler, Texas and attended TCU in Fort Worth were he met and married Margie. They moved to Austin and in 1966 Richard started his 1st film production company, Motion Picture Productions (MPP). In 1972, he opened Richard Kidd Productions (RKP) and in 1977, moved the headquarters to Dallas and over the next 25 years expanded to offices in Austin and Houston. In 1995, Richard sold the company to Carabiner out of NYC.
In 1998, Richard and Margie (and the cats Time and Money) departed for a five year, 26,000-mile world cruise on-board their trawler, Miss Texas. In 2003, after their Mediterranean tour, they returned to Austin and to their new home in Driftwood, Texas.
He became deeply involved in exploring the history of Hays County, was appointed to the Hays County Historical Commission and, in 2008, became the Commission’s Director of Documentary Filmmaking. In 10 years, he produced, recorded and edited over a dozen documentaries, recorded hundreds of hours of oral histories and supported live events to unveil restoration projects all around the county. All of these can be viewed on YouTube at the Hays County Historical Commission’s page.
Richard lived a big life! He experienced much of the world, enjoyed time with his family, tried new things and encouraged others to do the same. Many of his adventures were grand, outrageous and sometimes totally unbelievable. Richard was charming, funny, a creative problem solver and extremely quotable. He was also a prolific photographer and we are blessed to be the keepers of this legacy and be able to relive the many adventures for years to come.
