CREEDMOOR – Texas Disposal Systems (TDS), a family-owned resource management company and leader in sustainable waste practices, is carrying on its annual tradition of helping Central Texans recycle their live Christmas trees.
Beginning Dec. 26, 2024, residents can drop off their unflocked Christmas trees, holly, pumpkins and other living decorations free of charge at TDS’ Christmas tree collection sites. These living decorations will be repurposed, made into organic mulch or compost and distributed by Garden-Ville, a TDS affiliated company, according to TDS, as it specializes in high-quality, eco-friendly products made from recycled green waste. The finished composts and mulches will be available for purchase at Garden-Ville stores throughout Central Texas.
TDS, which operates one of the region’s most advanced recycling facilities, has been helping Central Texas residents recycle their Christmas trees and organic holiday decorations sustainably for more than a decade, stated a TDS news release. Recycling Christmas trees helps reduce landfill waste and promote a circular economy by giving new life to organic products that can be turned into compost, mulch, fertilizer and more.
“Recycling Christmas trees is a win-win for both the environment and our community,” said Adam Gregory, vice president of business development at TDS. “By repurposing these trees instead of sending them to the landfill, we reduce waste, conserve space and help create valuable mulch and compost for gardens and landscaping. It’s a simple way to keep our holiday spirit alive while making a positive impact on the planet. At TDS, we encourage everyone to recycle their trees – it’s an easy step that benefits us all.”
Trees and decorations must be unflocked (not covered in a layer of artificial snow or frosting) and free of lights, ornaments, metal and other non-living contaminants, in order to be recycled. A $55 contamination fee will be assessed for trees and decorations that are dropped off and not free of the items listed above. When bringing loads for drop-off, customers are required to ensure materials are tied and secured, per Texas law. TDS does not accept artificial/fake trees for recycling.
For cities with TDS green waste service, TDS offers curbside collection of unflocked Christmas trees for recycling through Jan. 31, 2025. For area-specific guidelines, visit www.texasdisposal.com/christmas-tree-recycling.
