John Clovis Brewington was born April 19, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas, to P. J. Brewington and Iva Mae (Lewis). He passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Manchaca, Texas, on January 3, 2025, at the age of 83. John was preceded in death by his parents P.J. Brewington and Iva Mae Brewington, his sisters Joan and Earlene, his brother Jimmy, and his son Ronny. He is survived by his children: John H. Brewington (Suzanne Dunsterville), Shane Brewington (Angella), and Bonnye Brewington (Kevin Turnell), his sister Edith Ann Cleveland (Donald), his brother Philip Dale Brewington (Sue), his ex-wife Charlene Dills, many grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him.
John’s home and heart have always been in central Texas. He grew up in and around San Antonio, Llano, and Austin. His early years were spent at Pleasant Hill School, in South Austin, until he decided to attend Buda High School. He was very active in school activities, including FFA and football, kept all of his yearbooks, and attended Buda High School reunions for years. After High School Graduation, John attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied engineering, although life took him in a different direction. While living in a duplex in South Austin, his building career emerged due to a fire. He bought the property and built what was to be the first of over 100 beautiful homes.
John was a touchstone for his family, solid, constant, and loved. He wore many hats throughout his life: plumber, son, song writer, brother, draftsman, father, consultant, husband, confidant, uncle, poet, grand-father, home builder, and many others. He learned and grew as the world changed, leaving behind old, false beliefs when proven faulty. John had a sly and often silly wit that was regularly a surprise. He kept an open mind and jumped into new challenges and technologies with verve. He was keen to help out others when shown a need, and he worked with a group in the local plumbers and pipefitters union to develop rules for and create a benevolence fund. He was often spare with his words, but what might have been unsaid was expressed through his actions and fierce love of his family and friends.
There will be a Celebration for John at the Onion Creek Senior Center on February 15th, 2025, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a meaningful charity of your choice. The Ronald McDonald house was a charity that was dear to John and was often the recipient of his donations.
