With planning going as far back as late 2023, ground was broken for the new Buc-ee’s travel center in San Marcos. Located off IH-35 at Old Army Drive, this Buc-ee’s location will be the largest in the area, according to city of San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson. “I did do the happy dance, yes,” said Hughson. “But the tax base that they’re bringing, the jobs that they’re bringing at competitive prices or, as [Buc-ee’s founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin] says, ‘Game-changing wages,’ with benefits, that’s going to be huge. The 175 [employees] is the minimum. There will be many more jobs than that.” The mayor was joined by members of the San Marcos City Council, representatives from Buc-ee’s, Hays County officials and Buc-ee the Beaver himself to break ground at the new location Wednesday, Jan. 29.
